X-rays have very soon be used to analyse the structure of e.g. crystals. The atomic distances in a crystal are in the range of the wavelength of X-rays. When a crystal is hit by X-rays, the lattice of regularly arranged atoms diffracts the light into different directions. By analysing these directions, the geometrical arrangement of the atoms in the crystal can be calculated.
